Who Owns the Recordings, and What Happens to Them? A Plain-English Guide to Family Privacy
A family’s photographs and spoken memories are among the most personal things that exist. Here is a plain-English answer on who owns what is recorded on Reminisce Road, who can see it, and what happens if you cancel or lose someone.
By Reminisce Road Editorial ·
Before a thoughtful son, daughter, or partner uploads a 1962 wedding photograph or records an older relative speaking about their childhood, a set of practical questions almost always comes up at the kitchen table: Who actually owns these recordings? Who else can hear them? Are our photographs used for advertising? And what happens if we close the account—or when our parent dies?
Because photographs, voices, and family memories are some of the most personal information there is, those questions deserve direct, plain-English answers rather than fine print. Here is exactly how Reminisce Road handles ownership and privacy today, matching our published privacy policy.
The person speaking owns their photographs, voice, and words
Every photograph added, every spoken recording, and every written transcript on a timeline belongs to the person who made them.
We never sell your information, never show advertising, never track you across other websites, and never share what is said with anyone for their own purposes. While a live spoken conversation is running, the services that help us deliver it—Cloudflare for hosting and storage, OpenRouter to prepare opening questions from a photograph, and Google Gemini to listen and reply during the spoken exchange—process the photograph and words solely to run that session for you. Every service and its exact role is named plainly on our privacy policy page.
Why memories stay on the person's own sign-in
Privacy leaks in family and care software usually happen when one login is allowed to browse another person's private life from afar. Reminisce Road draws a deliberate, strict boundary instead:
- One person's memories live on their own sign-in. Family members sitting beside Mum or Dad use their session together, and visiting relatives read or play back the timeline with them. Separate accounts do not receive automatic remote access to someone else's words or voice. - Care-facility staff and administrators cannot browse memories. In a residential care organisation account, staff can set up locations and help start a session on a resident's signed-in tablet, yet staff and administrator accounts cannot view residents' photographs, read transcripts, or play recordings. - Community fundraising groups see zero family data. When a family subscribes through a support group's referral link, the group receives aggregate monthly counts and totals only—never names, emails, photographs, or conversations.
Copies, account deletion, and what happens when someone dies
We keep an account, its photographs, and its conversations for as long as the account remains open with us. At any time, the account holder can write to us through our contact page to ask for a copy of their information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete the account. When you ask us to delete an account, the photographs, recordings, and conversations are deleted along with it.
Families also rightly ask what happens when a parent or partner passes away. We are still building dedicated bereavement and family-handover tools, and we will never promise automated features that do not exist yet. Today, everything saved on a timeline stays untouched as it is, and family members can write to us directly through the contact page—where a real person on the team reads every message and replies by email.
Questions & answers
Who owns the photographs and voice recordings saved in Reminisce Road?
The photographs, spoken recordings, and written transcripts belong to the person who made them on their account. They are kept so the person and their family can read and listen back to them, and are never sold or used for advertising.
Are family photographs or spoken memories used to show ads or sold to third parties?
Never. Reminisce Road has no advertising, no cross-site tracking, and never sells or shares personal photographs, transcripts, or audio recordings for third-party purposes.
Can care-home administrators or community fundraising partners listen to a person's recordings?
No. Organisation and location staff accounts cannot see private photographs, read transcripts, or play recordings, and community referral partners receive strictly aggregate subscription counts with zero subscriber details.
What happens to our photographs and recordings if we ask to delete the account?
Your photographs, voice recordings, and conversations are kept for as long as you hold an account with us. You can write through the contact page to request a copy of your information first, and if you ask us to delete your account, your photographs, recordings, and conversations are deleted with it.
What happens to a timeline on Reminisce Road when a family member dies?
Dedicated after-death handover tools are still being built, so we do not make automated promises ahead of what exists today. Currently, saved memories remain safely intact as they are, and families can write to a person on our team through the contact page for help.
